Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included with the Garmin Approach R50?

The standard package includes everything needed for a turnkey golf simulation and launch monitor experience:

Garmin Approach R50 launch monitor

Protective carrying case for easy portability

USB-C charging cable for recharging the device

Quick-start guide for simple setup instructions

Because the R50 features built-in simulator software and a touchscreen display, you don’t need a computer, tablet, or projector—just place it down, turn it on, and start playing.

What makes the Garmin Approach R50 different from other launch monitors?

The Garmin Approach R50 is the first portable launch monitor with an integrated golf simulator, meaning you can play a full round of golf, from drive to putt, without needing additional hardware like a projector or computer. Unlike radar-based systems that require large tracking spaces, the R50 utilizes three high-speed cameras to capture direct measurements of more than 15 ball and club metrics, providing highly precise feedback for improving your game.

Additionally, its 10-inch color touchscreen allows for seamless navigation of data, training sessions, and virtual rounds—something that most launch monitors lack. Whether you’re indoors or at the range, the R50 provides a full golf experience in a compact, all-in-one design.

Does the Garmin R50 work indoors and outdoors?

Yes! The Garmin R50 is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, making it one of the most versatile launch monitors available. Indoors, it functions as a standalone simulator, displaying ball and club data directly on its built-in screen without the need for external devices. Outdoors, it acts as a portable launch monitor, giving you the ability to practice with real ball flight data on the driving range.

To enhance accuracy, the R50 includes a built-in barometer, which automatically adjusts carry distances based on factors like elevation, air pressure, and temperature—a feature rarely found in portable launch monitors. This means your distances indoors will be calibrated accurately to match real-world conditions.

What software does the Garmin R50 support?

The Garmin R50 is preloaded with Home Tee Hero, a 43,000-course simulator that allows you to play real-world golf courses without requiring additional software. This makes it an excellent plug-and-play solution, especially for golfers who don’t want to deal with complicated simulator setups.

In addition, the R50 integrates with the Garmin Golf™ app, which provides access to:

Session tracking for analyzing progress over time

Leaderboards for competing with players worldwide

Shot dispersion analysis to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses

While it does not natively support GSPro or E6 Connect, its built-in simulation software and touchscreen interface provide a standalone experience unmatched by most other launch monitors in its category.

Can I use my own golf balls and clubs?

Yes! The Garmin R50 works with any standard golf ball—there’s no need for specially marked or RFID-tagged balls like some launch monitors require.

Because the R50’s cameras track spin rates and launch conditions with direct measurement, golfers can train with the exact same golf balls they use on the course, ensuring a realistic practice experience.

Some launch monitors struggle with short-game data, but the R50 excels by providing detailed insights on spin, ball speed, and launch conditions, even for low-speed shots. Whether you’re working on long drives or fine-tuning your putting stroke, the R50 ensures you receive reliable data across your entire bag.

How does the high-speed impact video feature work?

The Garmin R50 records and displays slow-motion impact videos, allowing golfers to see precisely how the clubface interacts with the ball at the moment of impact. Using three high-speed cameras, the R50 captures:

Face angle at impact (open, closed, or square)

Strike location on the clubface

Spin axis and ball movement post-contact

This instant visual feedback is invaluable for golfers looking to correct mishits, diagnose swing flaws, and optimize launch conditions. Unlike traditional radar-based systems that only provide numerical data, the R50’s video function gives clear, actionable insights for improving shot consistency.

Does the Garmin R50 support putting and short game shots?

Yes! Unlike some launch monitors that struggle with wedge shots and putting, the Garmin R50 is designed to track a full round—from tee shots to putts. It accurately measures ball speed, launch angles, spin rates, and club path, making it useful for short-game practice.

By providing slow-motion impact videos, the R50 also helps golfers identify strike location on the clubface, a critical factor when fine-tuning chipping, pitching, and putting techniques. Whether you’re working on lag putts or dialing in wedges, the R50 ensures you get comprehensive data on every type of shot.

How accurate is the Garmin R50 compared to high-end launch monitors?

The Garmin R50 is one of the most advanced camera-based launch monitors in its category, offering direct measurements rather than using estimated data based on algorithms. Thanks to three high-speed cameras, it captures ball speed, launch angle, spin rates, and club path with exceptional accuracy.

Compared to high-end systems like TrackMan (radar-based) or GCQuad (photometric-based), the R50 holds its own, particularly in indoor settings where radar systems can struggle with ball tracking due to limited space. While radar-based monitors tend to perform better outdoors with long ball flight tracking, the R50’s precise camera-based measurement system makes it an ideal solution for home use and range sessions alike.

R50

I know its a little more pricey than the Skytrac but well worth the extra money. I would highly recommend the R50. I do hope that they can offer an updated software in the future to play different games such as scramble.
